In Response to Comments - Simmer Down Michigan Fans

So I can admit that perhaps I slightly exaggerated the events of the Minnesota-Michigan game. My bad. Although in fairness Michigan was a little sluggish in the second half of the game.

But no one can honestly tell say that Arrington's first TD in the game was good. Please, please watch the instant replay before commenting. His foot never came in in bounds. The commentators were talking about this play the whole game! And the point is John L. did not even have a chance to throw down the red flag because (a) the refs were not looking at him and wouldn't have seen the flag in which case nothing would have been reviewed and (b) Michigan lined up its field goal team in like 2sec. It reminds me somewhat of the LSU-Auburn game two weeks ago. In any case, the play was clearly questionable, and if the refs were taking it upon themselves to review Stanton's TDs' later in the game they certainly should have reviewed Arrington's TD. As a Michigan State fan, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

Any how, you have to let us State fans blather on a bit. It's the only outlet we have in a very trying part of the year. I'll understand if you feel the need to do the same during the basketball season...

(1) Arrington was definitely out. It should have been reviewed, but Michgan ran a hurry up and they didn't have time. John L. should have thrown the red flag. But I consider that td to be largely inconsequential. Arguments can be made regarding a shift in momentum, but the bottom line is that such arguments are too speculative. If this was a one possession game, such arguments would be more persuasive. As it was, it was 2nd down, and there is no reason to believe that - even if Smith had thrown the flag as he should have - that we wouldn't have scored on the very next play.

(2) Michigan's sluggishness in the second half in this game and all others is a natural consequence of the huge lead we always have going into halftime. Lloyd put it best after the MSU game when he stressed that second half, he wanted to run the ball every play to eat the clock, thereby ending the game with our offense running fewer plays in the hope of avoid unnecessary injury to our players when the game was clearly in hand. Second-half sluggishness is a luxury granted to teams that blow up their opponents in the first half. Only when we do it, unlike MSU, it doens't result in 3-point losses. I like MSU though. I actually think they can (and maybe will) beat OSU this week, even w/o Trannon. They are not nearly as bad as they have looked the last three weeks. They will surprise someone this season, it's just a question of who.

To your point (1) my sister said the same thing when I was screaming at the TV. And sadly, you are probably right. But the only way I can stay sane until basketball season is to live in denial...

The clock-milking in the second half really killed us last year because we didn't have big enough leads, but I've come around to it this season.
Anyways, I love talking football trash and you can talk basketball trash back anytime :).
